For many years local Pipe Bands have entertained the residents and visitors to Moffat. Between the two World Wars, the Band was composed of members of the local Territorial Army and Army Cadet Force. After the Second World War ended in 1945, a Pipe Band was formed by the local citizens association, functioning between 1947 and 1951.

The present band was formed on 3rd June 1952 under the leadership of the late Albert Richardson; as a consequence, the Band wear the MacBeth tartan. This tartan was worn for the first time on the eve of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1953.

Since its formation the Band has taken part in all local festivals. In 1967 the Band were founder members of the "Massed Border Pipe Band" under the leadership of the late Pipe Major Robert Short of Hawick. Moffat Pipe Band has appeared with the Massed Bands throughout the Borders and in Edinburgh.

In 1972 the Band were invited to take part in the Annual Sports Meeting of the Lakeland village of Grasmere, the event being filmed and shown by the BBC nationally.

During 1974 the band moved onto the international scene when they were invited to take part in the International Folkclans Festival in Mechelen, Belgium and the Band returned there to play again in 1977. That same year the Band also visited Rudesheim in Germany.

It is interesting to note that one of the original members of the 1952 band is still with us in the person of Drum Major Tom Wylie. The present Pipe Major is Iain McIntyre under whose leadership the Band has been very successful competing at Grade 4 level, with the future looking good.
