A History of Customer Service...The Balmoral Hotel has been through many changes since it first began as the 200-year-old Coaching Inn called "The Spur". It was probably owned by tenants of the Johnstone family, whose crest of the Flying Spur also was seen on a church. Under its formidable owner in the 1800s, Mrs. Cranstoun, the Spur Inn became the main Coaching Inn in Moffat, seizing the contract for the Carlisle to Edinburgh Mail Coaches from the "King's Arms". Two Mail Coachmen lost their lives in 1831 when they froze to death up by the Devil's Beeftub, probably leaving from the Spur Inn. Their graves are in the local churchyard. Mrs. Cranstoun eventually drove the "King's Arms" out of business and bought up the vacant property as the Annandale Arms. More recently, the re-named Balmoral has established itself as an important traditional Hotel in Moffat. Under the wise guidance of Jim and Teresa Doonan, it is bidding fair to succeed in the same energetic manner as Mrs. Cranstoun. Certainly, visitors to the Balmoral can be sure of comfort and good food at a very competitive price. |
...Maintained and Enhanced...The Lounge Bar and Restaurant of the hotel preserve much of the timberwork in the old coaching inn. One may enjoy the comfort of modern facilities in the ambiance of an inn which has catered for many thousands of travellers. Where once the 'Boots' plied his trade, there is now shoe cleaning equipment, whilst the modern hair dryer replaces the lady's-maid; however, we still have ironing facilities to help our guests maintain a good appearance. |
