Suzi Cairns

The remote village of Boreland, nestling in the hills near Eskdalemuir, Dumfries, is the idyllic setting for the imaginative colourful design work of Suzi Cairns.

Suzi is a textile designer who, having completed a four year course at Cumbria College of Art, began to design textiles for the soft furnishing industry in 1993.

As with many rural home based businesses, she used her attic space as her studio/workshop. Over the next four years as the business developed, the need for more suitable premises became increasingly apparent.

A grant of £ 4,300 Sterling from Groundbase under the Micro Enterprise Growth Assistance Programme (MEGA), helped Suzi to build and equip a new studio beside her house, which she moved into in August 1997.

Suzi works freelance for a Manchester-based design agency. She draws and paints the designs on paper, the designs then being sold worldwide to manufacturers. The designs are then reproduced onto furnishings, fabrics, wallcoverings and bedding. Her designs can be found in catalogues and in many high street stores.

The photograph below shows Suzi Cairns at work in her new design studio.
