[COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME]
West Sound Radio

Groundbase has again linked up with local radio station Westsound to develop another first on air, a European Focus. This new weekly series tours Europe, 'visiting' a different country each week.
In a magazine-style format, the programmes include links with other European Radio Stations, local music, general information on the lifestyle and cultural aspects of each country, and also features a number of people from Dumfries & Galloway who now live and work in Europe.
Graham Platt, Programme Executive with Groundbase, explained. "The aim of European Focus is to inform the listeners in Dumfries & Galloway of the close links and similarities we have with other European Countries and to reinforce the the message that Scotland, - and indeed the United Kingdom, - is very much a part of this Europe."
The first programme went on air on Friday 25th September 1998 on Westsound FM and featured Spain. A radio link was established with Radio Libertat in Madrid and went out live on air to around five million listeners in the Madrid area.
This late summer storm of arts and entertainment has been extended from its initial Scots and Irish content to include performances from other European regions with Celtic connections. From the 6th August, a new radio programme of events taking place during the Gaelforce Season can be heard at a regular slot on Fridays at 3:50 p.m. on West Sound. Funded by Groundbase, presenter Cameron Murray will be previewing events, talking to festival organisers and playing some of the music that will be heard during the season. The programme will also follow the progress of Groundbase Transnational Projects, some of which link into Gaelforce with appearances from French and Italian musicians, artists, craftworkers and chefs being planned.
