Wigtown Book Town

Saturday 16th May 1998 sawthe launch of Wigtown as Scotland's Book Town and the latest European Book Town alongside Hay-on-Wye, Redu, Bredevoort and Becherel.

For a small town of 1,100 inhabitants, this will have qa major impact on the local economy, as there are already 18 book-related businesses operating in the town, many having re-located from other parts of the United Kingdom.

A substantial increase in the number of visitors to the area is predicted which wwill have a knock-on effect on local businesses and surrounding towns. A funding package has now been put together to develop the Book Town.

A Book Town delegation recently attended the first European Book Town Festival in Bredevoort, where contacts were made with other Book Town representatives.
