Tourism is recognised as one of the major industries in Dumfries and Galloway, and one which offers great opportunities for the future.
Groundbase supports the industry with a range of programmes designed to assist existing operations and encourage new joint initiatives. Some are upgrades and improvements, others are new initiatives or pilot programmes. Dumfries and Galloway Tourist Board are partners in some programmes:-
- SELF-CATERING ACCOMMODATION UPGRADE PROGRAMME :
Grants totalling £ 128,000 Sterling were awarded to 60 self-catering upgrade projects.
- VISITOR ATTRACTION ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME :
39 visitor attractions have received £ 122,000 Sterling towards the costs of upgrading visitor facilities.
- SECTORAL DEVELOPMENT GROUPS WITHIN TOURISM PROGRAMME :
This encourages the formation and development of groups within sectors of the industry. Grants up to 50%, ranging from £ 1,000 Sterling to a maximum of £ 10,000 Sterling are payable to each group towards the costs of setting up and implementing business strategies such as marketing. The Dumfries and Galloway Hoteliers Association are the first group to receive support under this programme.
- TOURISM CATERING INITIATIVE :
So far, four projects totalling £ 32,600 Sterling have been approved in this new 1997 pilot programme aimed at improving eating facilities for visitors.
- INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR TOURISM :
Seven small hotels have been assisted with the purchase of computers and the relevant staff training to improve their administration and booking services.
