ROOTS '97 Clan Gathering, Dumfries

Between the 20th May and the 1st June 1997, a major gathering of the Clans and Families of the South of Scotland took place at the scenic and historic Crichton Royal Estate in Dumfries.

The Roots '97 weekend began with a reception, followed by a march through the town behind pipes and drums to the tented village where each Clan or Family had their own site.

A number of traditional crafts were on display, including a kiltmaker, a Lowland pipemaker and an heraldic leatherworker. The event was rounded off with an Ecumenical service in the beautiful Crichton Church.

A grant of £ 4,758 Pounds Sterling from Groundbase assisted with the marketing and staging of Roots '97, which was attended by over 2,000 people and created additional business for local traders and hoteliers.
