A Rural Womens' Project, started in January 1998.
Groundbase, in conjunction with Langholm & Eskdale Initiatives and the Scottish Agricultural College, organised an open meeting for women in Langholm Community Centre. The aim of the meeting was to encourage them to recognise and utilise their skills on a co-operative basis and to become economically active.
From the 36 women who attended the initial meeting, 16 have attended a 2-day Confidence Boosting and Self-Esteem Course and 5 have started up their own small businesses. A core group of around 12 women worked together to prepare and run a food-stand at the Langholm Food Festival on 30th August 1998 and to put together a Skills Directory of women in the local area.
NETWORK WEST (Women of Eskdale Skills Team) has established a link with the Agendum LEADER II womens' group in Sweden and a video conference has already taken place to exchange ideas and goodd practice. Future activities are already planned by the group.
