Midsummer Celtic Gathering, Langholm

The mill town of Langholm situated on the River Esk in Dumfriesshire came to life over the weekend of 27th to 29th June 1997, with a programme of activities and entertainment in the annual Midsummer Celtic Gathering.

The event, organised by staff at Langholm Community Centre, was designed to celebrate Celtic culture and heritage, its history, mythology and language, through music, dance, games, art, crafts, song and pageant.

Music workships introduced visitors to the Mouth-Organ, Clarsach (small or lap harp) and the Bagpipes. These were followed by a concert featuring well-known Scottish musicians Donald Black, Wendy Stewart and Malcolm Jones of 'Runrig' fame.

A grant of just under £ 5,000 from Groundbase assisted with the marketing and publicity for the event. The event was attended by over 5,000 people over the weekend, providing a welcome boost to local hoteliers and traders.
