Civil Engineering Heritage Brochures

A Joint Marketing Programme project

Kenneth McCrae, a retired Civil Engineer from Castle Douglas, has a great interest in Civil Engineering Structures across Dumfries and Galloway. Many are very old, having been designed and built by such renowned engineers as Thomas Telford (1759-1834), John Rennie (1761-1821) and Walter Newall (1780-1863).

There was very little, if any, information for visitors to the area about the origins and history of the various bridges, lighthouses, dams and viaducts, which they would encounter in their travels.

Mr. McCrae wanted to design and publish a brochure aimed at visitors as a way of filling this void, and to promote the Civil Engineering Heritage of Dumfries and Galloway.

Groundbase, in conjunction with the Glasgow and West of Scotland Association of the Institute of Civil Engineers, Solway Heritage, Bart Holdings Ltd. and Barr & Stevenson Ltd., provided the funding to produce the brochures. These are now available at Tourist Information Centres throughout the Region.

The pictures below are of Tongland Bridge, designed and built by Thomas Telford in 1805 on the mail road to Portpatrick from Dumfries. To see larger pictures, click on the image.
