But there are also relics of mines and quarries, echoes of a date when wealth was sought and found in the metal-rich hills. The gold of Leadhills and the silver and lead of Wanlockhead, were only to be surpassed in profitability by coal at Kirkconnel and Sanquhar, and the granite at Creetown and Dalbeattie. The Gem Rock Museum at Creetown is a memory of that time, and of the wonders of mineralogy.
Quarries and mines are eventually worked out, their impact seen in spoil-heaps, flooded gravel-pits and occasionally in interesting buildings and machinery.
