Description :

Spoutwells is a small working farm one mile from the ferries and centre of Stranraer, the seaport of Dumfries and Galloway. Our accommodation is conveniently sited for access to the Rhins, - the Mull of Galloway, - with its historic castles, fine gardens, sea and loch fishing and five golf courses.

The farm is in open countryside on the outskirts of Stranraer and conveniently near to the Southern Uplands Way, so is perfect for those who enjoy walking and cycling. Stranraer itself has a leisure centre and a swimming pool, as well as offering day excursions on the ferries to Ireland.

Local Attractions :

Spoutwells Farm is conveniently sited for those wishing to visit The Mull of Galloway, South Ayrshire, The Machars and Galloway Forest Park. The attractions near Spoutwells Farm are summarised below.

Stranraer is at the centre of the Rhins, an area covering the Mull of Galloway and the land between Loch Ryan and Luce Bay. It has many excellent beaches, a variety of landscapes and a fascinating history and wildlife. The best-known attractions are the Azalea and Rhododendron gardens of Castle Kennedy and Ardwell, and the sub-tropical Logan Botanic Gardens. Portpatrick on the west of the Mull is a harbour town that was once a ferry port, until the more sheltered site at Stranraer was chosen. Port Logan, towards the south end of the Mull, was another attempt at a ferry port, one of the few failures of Thomas Telford.

Furthest south in Scotland is the Mull of Galloway itself, where there is an RSPB reserve around the lighthouse and the views reach to Ireland and the Isle of Man. It was once said that from the Mull one could see four kingdoms, - England, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland. At the other end of the Mull stands Corsewall Lighthouse, now a remarkably fine hotel, with views as far west as Ireland and as far north as the Mull of Kintyre. Black Rock Head lighthouse, just north of Portpatrick, overlooks the remarkable white sands of Killintringan Bay; these compete with New England Bay, on the east side of the Mull, for being the finest beach in the Rhins.

The similarity of Portpatrick to a Cornish fishing village reflects the saying that Dumfries and Galloway are the Cornwall and Devon of Scotland, though the mountains east of Newton Stewart are far more impressive than Exmoor and Dartmoor. The land is fertile in the lowlands, with fields grazed by sheep and cows, but the uplands are harsher and more desolate, with many grouse-moors now given over to the whispering conifers of forestry plantations. The woods are full of birds, deer and small animals.

Golf is a popular pastime in Scotland. The Rhins have six major courses, - Portpatrick Golf Club (Dinvin & Dunskey courses), Lagganmore Golf Club, St. Medan's (Port William), Wigtownshire & County (Glenluce), Stranraer Golf Club and Wigtownshire Golf Club.
More details on these are available in the Dumfries & Galloway Golf Links website.

How To Find Us :

(1) From the A75 approaching Stranraer from the east, take the bypass signed 'Black Parks Industrial Estate'. Follow this road all the way through to the road south from Stranraer to Sandhead and Portpatrick. At the second main turning to the right (just before the former railway bridge), turn right into the road for Spoutwells Farm.

(2) Coming from the Ayr direction and from the Cairnryan ferry terminal on the A77, turn left off the coast road just after reaching the 30 m.p.h. sign before Stranraer (beside Rephad Farm), then carry on across the A75 until you reach the bypass, turning right and following directions as in the previous paragraph.

(3) Coming from the Stranraer Ferry Terminal, turn left from the terminal exit along the A77 then take the signs for Sandhead and the railway station. Passing beside the station and the hospital, you will come to the main road south towards Sandhead and Portpatrick. Follow directions from then on as in the first paragraph.

A sketch map of the route is at Spoutwells Route Map.

A map of Dumfries and Galloway can be found in the Where We Are page.
