Glengennet Farm

Another View

Glengennet Farm :

Glengennet was built in the 1890's by the Brown family as a shooting lodge in the Upper Stinchar valley near the conservation village of Barr, 7 miles from Girvan. It is a fine stone-built house retaining many original features and provides an ideal setting for a relaxing holiday in South West Scotland.

Now a 500 acre farm rearing Scottish Blackface sheep and beef cattle, Glengennet is set in an elevated position with panoramic views over open countryside towards the Galloway Forest Park.

Accommodation :

Twin and double bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom, in former shooting lodge, set in peaceful, unspoilt countryside overlooking the Galloway Forest Park.

Guests' bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Each room has en-suite facilities, easy chairs, tea/coffee making facilities and heating. The lounge/dining room overlooks the garden and has TV. Leaflets, guides and maps, are available to help guests plan their day.

Breakfast is the only meal served, but there is a choice of menu with excellent preserves. Packed lunches and sandwiches are available on request. Barr village (1¼ miles away) has two small hotels where good reasonably priced meals are available.

Local Attractions :

Glengennet Farm is conveniently sited for those wishing to visit South Ayrshire, Galloway Forest Park, Mull of Galloway and The Machars. The attractions near Glengennet Farm are summarised below.

Glengennet is sited in the upper reaches of the Stinchar valley. The area is peaceful with little traffic, rolling hills and forests (the Galloway Forest Park) ideal for walking. There is everything from relaxed lochside walking to the more adventurous upland trek such as the Southern Uplands Way. Loch, Sea and River Fishing are available. There is free fishing for visitors on the River Stinchar, which runs near the farm; the best fishing is in September and October. Or you may prefer to ride or to cycle; the Galloway Forest park is excellent for this and for birdwatching. Cycle routes are marked from Barr village.
See Nature Reserves for further details of wildlife sites.

The famous golf courses of Troon and Turnberry, and the Brunston Castle Golf Course, are only a short car drive away. See Dumfries & Galloway Golf Links for further details of other nearby courses and links.

Culzean Castle and Country Park, Glentrool, the Burns Country around Ayr, Castle Kennedy and other major attractions are within twenty miles of Glengennet. The gardens at Culzean and Castle Kennedy have rich and colourful arrays of flowering rhododendrons and azaleas in May and June and are well worth a visit.Or you may decide on a day trip to Arran.

Local Towns :

Barr is one and a half miles away; it has a general store/post office, and a small hotel providing good food in the bar or dining room. Girvan is seven miles away; it has a variety of shops, hotels and restaurants, a swimming pool and the nearest petrol station to Glengennet. Ayr is twenty two miles away but offers a much wider range of facilities and entertainments that include a cinema and an ice rink.

How To Find Us :
There is an excellent Rail service to Glasgow from Ayr. Barr is only 55 minutes' drive from Stranraer and Cairnryan, with regular sailings to Northern Ireland.

When at Barr, turn at the King's Arms Hotel (taking the Glengennet road), continue for 1¼ miles and turn left, after 100 yards turning left again.

You may wish to print out Glengennet in Scotland and A Sketch Map of the route to Glengennet Farm.

A map of Dumfries and Galloway and Southern Ayrshire can be found in the Where We Are page.
