The smaller local courses with variety and a friendly welcome, to be recommended to players of all ages and abilities. Dumfries and Galloway Region has over 30 golf courses of varying kinds. All the courses have different settings; some are links courses, others on hill slopes inland, with a variety of challenges.

The host for this list is Craigadam Estate near Crocketford, centrally located within the Region and within fifty miles of the great courses at Troon, Ayr and Turnberry. Further details of the excellent accommodation and facilities at Craigadam are given elsewhere on this site.

Note on terminology : 'SSS' is Standard Scratch figure for 18 holes or equivalent; courses' severity is otherwise given as a 'Par' number.

Gateway to Golf passes may be used at courses indicated here by a [G2G] symbol. Disabled facilities shown by [Di].

'Gateway to Golf' Passes :

This scheme has two kinds of Pass, entitling the bearer to play up to 36 holes per course on up to 10 of the 25 participating courses within a 3 or 5 weekday period in the same week. Full details from

Yardage : 11-hole - 3062 yards - par-41 for 11 holes. Links type. Upgrading towards 18 holes 1999-2000. Sea winds.
Clubhouse : Converted farm cottage. Basic facilities. No dress restrictions. Other comments : Fine views of the hills and sea. 'Pay and play' site. Clubs etc. for hire. Very well drained, - very rarely closes.

Brighouse Bay Golf Club : [G2G]

Brighouse Bay Golf and Leisure Club, Borgue, nr. Kirkcudbright DG6 4TS.
Yardage : 9-hole - 5426 yards - SSS-66. Coastal/links type. Extending to 18 holes for June 1999.
Clubhouse : Next to Leisure Club Bar and Bistro. All-year, facilities include 16.5 metre indoor pool. Part of Brighouse Bay Holiday (caravan) Park.
Other comments : All-weather course, views excellent, 4th hole 195 yard par 3 a considerable challenge. Water hazard at 8th, tricky 9th. Wind and gullies.

Castle Douglas Golf Club :

Clubhouse : Modern clubhouse, catering and bar May to September. Car Park.
Other Comments : Access generally available. No visitors after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Craigieknowes Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 2782 yards - Par-54. Parkland on hill slopes.
Clubhouse : Tickets and club hire from Caravan Park shop across the road. A pay and play course without booking or dress restrictions.
Other Comments : Most holes par 3 and fairly short but challenging. Select clubs carefully. Beginners and moderately experienced golfers may like this course. Parking area.

The Crichton Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 6168 yards - SSS-69. Parkland on hill slope.
Clubhouse : Ladies and gents' toilets and changing room. Bar, lounge, meals, shop for items of equipment. Being upgraded for 1999. Trolleys for hire.
Comments : Weekdays, pay and play, telephone to check availability then and at weekends advised.

Dalbeattie Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 4200 yards - SSS-60. Parkland/hill land. [Hole yardage being increased] Currently 5 x Par 3 and 4 x Par 4 from visitors' tees.
Clubhouse : Ladies and gents toilets, washing and changing facilities. Bar and catering facilities during April-October season.
Other Comments : Good course for sharpening a short game. Par 4 6^th hole good, par 3 4^th hole demands very accurate tee shot to a small green. Wednesday is Ladies' Day, Thursday is Gentlemens' Day, - visitors must keep clear of match players. No visitors after 5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Phone to check availability.

Gatehouse of Fleet Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 5042 yards - SSS-66. Parkland on hill slope. Drains well - no winter greens needed.
Clubhouse : Basic, changing facilities for ladies and gents. Contact the administrator to book onto the course.
Other Comments : Going since 1921. Remarkable views down one of the finest valleys in southern Scotland and inland towards Cairnsmore of Fleet. 9^th hole par 3 has a difficult shot 162 yards from the tee down to a small green.

Gretna Golf Club and Driving Range :

Yardage : 9-hole - 6430 yards - SSS-72 Parkland. Also Driving Range.
Clubhouse : Recent build, with changing rooms for men and women.
Comments : Equipment for hire. Par-5 4^th hole challenging. Advance tee booking best during weekends. 12-bay Golf Driving Range (8 covered).

Hoddom Castle Golf Course : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 4548 yards - Par-66 (for 18). Parkland.
No Clubhouse or dress restrictions. Pay and Play Golf, fees paid at Warden's Office.
Comments : A good beginner's course in a relaxing setting.

St. Medan Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 4454 yards - SSS-63. Coastal dunes (links) course.
Clubhouse : Basic, ladies and gents changing facilities. Catering April - September. Generally no need to book during the week.
Other Comments : Par 4 235 yard 4th hole has elevated tee shot seawards. Par 3 8^th hole also good.

New Galloway Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 50006 yards - SSS-67. Hill land.
Clubhouse : Basic, ladies and gents changing facilities. Bar between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m. during summer. Meals at local pubs and hotels. Pay and play in weekdays. Ring Secretary for any other information.
Other Comments : First and second fairways lead to a rather fine view. 6^th hole par-4 256 yard is very good. Course excellent for wildlife, - buzzards overhead, wild flowers spring to autumn.

Park of Tongland Golf Academy and Driving Range :

Yardage : 9-hole par-3 Golf Course newly opened.
Clubhouse : Planned.
Comments : Driving Range has 10 floodlit bays, a pitching area and a bunker practice area. 10% Discount at Driving Range for Gateway Pass holders.

Sanquhar Golf Club :

Yardage : 9 holes - 5630 yards - SSS 68. Parkland course.
Clubhouse : Not available. As against that, good pay and play flexibility.
Comments : Some very challenging par 4 holes, but a good course for golfers of moderate ability.

Wigtown and Bladnoch Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 5462 yards - SSS-67. Parkland course.
Clubhouse : Changing and toilet facilities for ladies and gents. Bar, with catering at all times in the season.
Other Comments : 3^rd hole par 3 195 yards from the tee. Uphill shot, out of bounds to left, sloping down to the right. Views of Wigtown Bay and the distant Lake District hills from 4^th tee.
